Spooky Snacks

It’s nearly Halloween! Costumes are ready, the house is decorated, we’ve been to the pumpkin patch. Now what? Let’s spend an afternoon making Spooky Snacks!

This Spooky Snack idea was inspired by a Fred Meyer food magazine that must have shown up in my mailbox sometime in the past 2 months. I didn’t even realize it was “Fred Meyer” branded until I looked to see who I should give credit to for this fun kid activity…  which then led me to chase FM down on IG and, I must say, they are doing some pretty creative and inspiring posts! Kudos to the FM social media team. Keep up the good work! And, to give credit where credit is due, the link to the Fred Meyer (Kroger) recipes and information.

Alright, we made some slight modifications to these, some on purpose and some by accident. We couldn’t get the bloodshot eyes to look right. I’m guessing we didn’t crack them enough so we just dripped food coloring over the tops of them which was disgusting but the kids liked it. I did it over wax paper for easy cleanup. And our Mummy Clementines just ended up being stabbed oranges with marshmallow eyes because I forgot to buy frosting and didn’t have any gauze. Good enough! The kids were all about stabbing toothpicks into the clementines.

Things you’ll need to make these Spooky Snacks:

  • Bloodshot Eyes

    • 4 eggs

    • 1tsp white vinegar

    • Black olives

    • Wax paper (optional)

  • Frankenstein Toast

    • 1 ripe avocado

    • 4 slices of bread

    • Seaweed - 1 small package

    • 1 red pepper

    • 1 cucumber

    • Black olives

  • Monster Mouths

    • 2 green apples

    • Nutella or other nut spread

    • Small marshmallows

  • Mummy Clementines

    • Clementines

    • Toothpicks (optional)

    • Candy eyes or mini chocolate chips

    • Frosting (to attach eyes)

    • Gauze

Spoiler alert, these snacks are WAY more fun to make than they are to eat. I ended up eating one of the Frankenstein Toasts, the kids each ate a Monster Mouth, and we had some of the Bloodshot Eyes. The kids did eat a lot WHILE we were making the snacks… mostly Nutella and marshmallows.

But honestly, we had a blast and the kids requested that we make more and do it all again the next day. Bonne chance!
