Plum Old Fashioned

The secret to a good old fashioned, in my opinion, is always to let the bourbon lead and to balance the other flavors (sweet, bitter, spice, citrus) to delight your nose and your tongue. I love the way the flavors change as the ice melts in the glass. The journey begins with spirits as the Freeland Bourbon and a hint of bitters hit you hard but leave you wanting more, the way a strong woman does. Your nose fills with the comforting spice of cloves and the warm citrus of blood orange. Finally, the unmistakable taste of plum and subtle sweetness from the syrup kiss your palette. I’ve recommended a 2oz pour. Sip slowly, and enjoy.

Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail)

  • 2oz Bourbon (Freeland Bourbon @freelandspirits)

  • .5oz plum syrup

  • Angostura bitters

  • 1 blood orange (for garnish)

  • 1 plum (for garnish)

  • cloves (for garnish)

  • Ice

Instructions

  • Make a plum simple syrup

  • Pour the bourbon and simple syrup into the glass, stir, then add ice

  • Add 2-3 dashes of bitters on top

  • Garnish: Use a vegetable peeler to peel 2 inch strips of orange peel, twist and hold the peel into a spiral shape and place on top of your drink. Throw a slice of plum in there and a few cloves.
