Dead Men Tell No Tales

This spooky creation was inspired by the Netfilx Series Drink Masters, which I recently started watching and LOVE! World-class mixologists showcase their dazzling cocktail-crafting skills as they compete for a $100K prize — and the title of Ultimate Drink Master. I am an aspiring mixologist and the red wine float on the New York Sour was something I had to try. But I wasn’t looking to balance that fruity red wine with bourbon… instead I went for, you guessed it, tequila! This twist on a classic margarita, a “Devil’s Margarita,” is the perfect drink to sip on Halloween as a stream of soggy trick-or-treaters accost your front door, or the following evening on Día de los Muertos. I’m calling this particular concoction “Dead Men Tell no Tales.”

I used a the La Rosa “pink” Reposado Tequila by Asombroso. A blanco tequila would also be delicious in this one. While a plain old simple syrup will do, I wanted a hint of citrus as a nod to the classic margarita. The Citrus Passion by Portland Syrups compliments the fruits of the wine and balances the tequila with a citrus forward but delicate blend of passionfruit, key lime, and blood orange.

Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail)

  • 1.5oz Tequila

  • .5oz lime juice (freshly squeezed is best)

  • .5oz simple syrup

  • .5oz of red wine

  • plastic spider or eyeball for garnish (don’t eat this)

Instructions

  • In a cocktail shaker, mix ice, tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake it.

  • Pour into a glass (ice is optional)

  • For the red wine float, grab a spoon and hover it just above the cocktail, just barely over the surface of the liquid in the glass. Then very slowly poor the red wine over the spoon so it slowly an gently floats on top.

  • Garnish with something spooky or a twist of lime.

  • Enjoy!

Happy Halloween!

If you make a version of this cocktail please share it with me on IG! It’s always more fun to enjoy a drink with company ;-). Can’t wait to see what you create!
